Cardinal Dolan Visits Buffalo, Celebrates Mass at St. Stanislaus Church

Buffalo’s historic Polonia neighborhood welcomed Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop Emeritus of New York, on Friday for a day centered on faith, community service, and Polish-American heritage.

The visit’s centerpiece was a special morning Mass at St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr Church, often called the Mother Church of Polonia in Western New York. Parishioners, clergy, and visitors from across the region filled the landmark East Side church to hear Cardinal Dolan celebrate the liturgy, underscoring the setting’s connection to Buffalo’s Polish-American roots.

For local Catholics, Dolan’s appearance carried special significance. Having recently retired after more than 17 years as Archbishop of New York, he remains one of the most recognizable figures in American Catholic life. Organizers said his visit highlighted both the enduring importance of St. Stanislaus and the contributions of Buffalo’s Polish-American community.

The celebration also included traditional cultural elements reflecting Polonia’s heritage. Community members gathered throughout the day to honor the church’s longstanding role as a spiritual and cultural center for generations of Western New Yorkers.

Beyond the church walls, the visit continued in the evening as the Polish American Civic Affairs Committee of Western New York honored Cardinal Dolan at an awards dinner at the Reikart House in Amherst, where he received the Mark Rivard Humanitarian Award in recognition of his lifetime of religious leadership, charitable service, and commitment to community.

The event also attracted notable guests, including businessman and radio personality John Catsimatidis, who participated in the day’s activities and addressed attendees. Organizers described the gathering as a celebration not only of faith but also of the civic and cultural traditions that continue to shape Buffalo’s Polish-American community.

For many in attendance, the day offered a rare opportunity to welcome a prominent church leader while reaffirming St. Stanislaus’ place in Buffalo’s religious and cultural landscape. As worshippers departed the church Friday, faith, heritage, and community remained at the heart of a memorable day in Buffalo’s historic Polonia.
