The Buffalo City Planning Board has signed off on the site plan for the Broadway Market’s long‑awaited renovation, clearing the way for the roughly $46 million overhaul to advance. Empire State Development will supply the capital funding that underpins the project.
With approval secured, the Market now moves into permitting, final design development, and contractor coordination. The submitted plan outlines a sweeping transformation of the East Side landmark, including a full interior modernization with new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and emergency systems.
Exterior updates aim to restore the building’s original 1950s character, replacing outdated storefront elements and reinforcing structural columns. The existing two‑level parking ramp will be demolished and replaced with a surface lot and a new loading dock, reshaping the site’s footprint and improving access.
“It allows us to get to the point where we do final design and work with the construction company that’s already been hired, Buffalo Construction, to move forward and get ourselves going as soon as we get through the tax credit process,” Broadway Market Management Chairman Peter Cammarata said.
“I think what’s really important is that we’re bringing the Broadway Market back. It’s something that is a fixture for the East Side; you have a lot of stuff that’s going on in that area,” Buffalo Planning Board Chair James Morrell said. “You have the Central Terminal that’s doing really well right now. So you have these two anchors in that community and I think it’s really important for that investment in that portion of the city to make the city that much better.”
